Holiday releases

According to a very helpful email that has been sent out by the wonderful people at Draft 2 Digital, Kobo will be closed from December 20th until January 3rd 2014. Apple will be closed from December 20th until December 27th. While there's no updates on Amazon or Barnes and Noble, I would expect delays there as much as they do.

I hope those employees enjoy their time off.

Speaking of Kobo, my entire library is once again live over there.

Kobo and Amazon readers

Due to a ridiculously inaccurate article circulating the internet, Amazon and Kobo are in somewhat of a PR nightmare. And it's all because of Erotica.

Kobo readers, you may have noticed you can't find anything by me at the moment. Why that is, we aren't entirely sure. The books haven't been delisted but they seem to have ceased to exist. Curious! I'm looking into it and I'll let all of you know what's going on as soon as I know.

Amazon readers, some of the catalog has been temporarily delisted. It should be back this weekend, pending any trouble, some of it with new titles due to their newest take on their guidelines. These are not new releases, these are just the same books with new faces to get along with Amazon's new guidelines. I'll see if I can find some way to notate that in the descriptions, but I'm not certain if their new guidelines will allow that either.

Barnes & Noble? iTunes? Smashwords? As far as I know, they aren't reacting to this at all but I'm keeping my ear to the ground.

And thus ends a fun heads up. Time to go fix a whole lot of tiny issues.

iTunes fans, rejoice!

Imagine my surprise when, for the first time in a bit, I was checking my email and suddenly I'm being told that there's story after story publishing to iTunes!

Nearly everything published in the last few blog entries, during Bundle Bonanza, is now live on iTunes! Maybe we're looking at a new, faster publishing time! Keep your fingers crossed! I imagine the rest will be live by tonight or tomorrow if there's no problems on Apple's end.

Shades of Desire fans:  I'm so sorry. With the flooding and now the chilly winter weather, my schedule is all out of whack. I'll make this delay up to you, too. Passion In Red will be out soon.

How Apple Publishing Works

When we publish to Apple/The iTunes store, the stars have to align in just the right spot in the sky.

The manuscript is uploaded to their system, complete with the cover, description, and a variety of other details. Keywords to make searching for the story simpler, author details, digital ISBN registration when necessary; it's a neat process and it's very quick.

It's then that we hit the snag.

Before any story, erotica or not, can be put up for sale on any of the major e-book outlets they must be reviewed. This is to make sure the stories meet their guidelines. For instance, Kindle doesn't allow incest to be published. Psuedo-incest is a different category and is allowed. If someone tries to publish an incest erotica short story, the reviewer will reject it because it doesn't meet Kindle's guidelines.

The reviewers work long, tiresome hours and tend to as many stories as they can, but there's never enough time in a day. The reviewers at iTunes are backed up several months and while they are moving as quickly as they can, they have an enormous task in front of them. Keep in mind, they aren't just reviewing erotica. They have to look at and read every single manuscript on the iTunes store before it is published as well as all the other details (cover, etc) and reference them against their guidelines.

It's a very hard job and we appreciate them, but the updating of our iTunes catalogs are in their hands once the upload button is pressed.

So why make this post?

I've received several curious emails asking me what was up, why some catalogs update faster than others. Systems vary. Sometimes systems go down entirely while uploads are happening. In the iTunes case, the reviewers are completely swamped with manuscripts. They'll get there, but the wait time is indeterminable. But we know they're working on it as hard as they can, and they're doing great.

Look for a sizzling new story on Kindle, Smashwords, Nook, and Kobo this weekend.

Your Kindle and Erotica: I Ain't Gonna Breed No More No More

In the interest of keeping innocents, well, innocent, Amazon has decided to filter a tremendous number of commonly searched erotica and romance story search terms. So what does that mean for you?

It means that if you want to buy The Farm's Billionaire Bundle, which focuses on breeding and lactation throughout three erotica stories, you may not be able to find it from the Amazon general search! Why? Because Lactation and Breeding are two of the search terms now "adult filtered". That means they can only be found by searching within the Kindle search category.

The Farm's Billionaire Bundle isn't the only story to get slapped with the adult filtered tag recently. Anything with gangbangs, lactation, breeding, dubious consent, reluctance, and the term "rough" have, mostly, been filtered. So if you're looking for these kinks, you're going to need to look under the Kindle search category. Not the All category. Those are the terms of which I'm aware as of this writing. There may be several more added to the list before everything is said and done, so if you can't find your favorite kink in a general/all category search, try swapping to just Kindle.

However, this is only for Amazon. There's very little I or anyone else can do about it to make it easier for our readers other than tell you this is going on and how to find what sends shivers down your spine. It's Amazon's choice and they have some good reasons behind doing it.

That said, we're almost back to normal here. Expect some new books soon.

Computers

There's nothing better than finishing a new project. You beam at the cover art, you put the last flourishes in the text and you get ready to talk about it on your blog, on twitter, and everywhere else because such a feeling of accomplishment is great!

Then your computer flickers.

"No, come on baby. I promise I'll be gentle," you whisper, desperately sending yourself the manuscript in an email or trying to make the usb ports work.

The computer allows you to get a solid connection with your external hard drive. Success, right? You hurry to grab the precious files... and the fans give a final excruciating cry before the whole thing turns  off.

Taps plays through your head as you stare into the black abyss of the monitor, your manuscript trapped in the magnetic plates beneath the keyboard.

The sequel to Good as Gold was supposed to be published today, but I'll leave it to my wonderful readers to figure out why I can't do that. Thankfully, there is a fantastic repair shop in town that's already working on it. Assuming the poor thing doesn't die again before I can get the manuscript off it, the sequel should be up next week. As for me?

I'm going laptop shopping.

Spring is springing and... so am I? I don't think that works.

I sat here in the cool darkness, listening to the creak of the ceiling fan overhead. Frou Frou's remake of Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For A Hero" playing on my laptop's speakers a stark contrast to the roaring wind outside. I stared at the blinking cursor on this blog post, considering what to write.
